Confessions of St. Augustine of Hippo (Extract from book 1)

St. Augustine of Hippo wrote 13 books titled Confessions in the latter part of the 4th Century AD. These books contain stories of his life including his thoughts/teachings about God, life and scripture.
Here is a little excerpt from book 1...

What art Thou then, my God? what, but the Lord God? For who is
Lord but the Lord? or who is God besides our God?

Most highest, most good, most potent, most omnipotent; most merciful,
yet most just; most hidden, yet most present; most beautiful, yet most
strong, stable, yet incomprehensible; unchangeable, yet all changing;
never new, never old; all-renewing, and bringing age
upon the proud, and they know it not; ever working, ever at rest;
still gathering, yet nothing lacking; supporting, filling, and overspreading;
creating, nourishing, and maturing; seeking, yet having
all things.

Thou lovest, without passion; art jealous,
without anxiety; repentest, yet grievest not; art angry, yet serene; Thou
changest Thy ways, leaving Thy plans unchanged;
receivest again what Thou findest, yet didst never lose; never in need, yet rejoicing in gains; never covetous, yet exacting usury.
Thou receivest over and above, that Thou mayest owe;
yet who can possess anything at all which is not already Thine,
Thou payest debts, owing nothing; remittest debts, losing nothing.

And what had I now said, my God, my life, my holy joy?
or what saith any man when he speaks of Thee? Yet woe to him
that speaketh not, since mute are even the most eloquent.

St. Augustine of Hippo, Book 1: Chapter 4. 397-398AD

what is greatness?

to be humble and to serve one another in love, an unconditional love...

a love that sacrifices self above agenda, wealth and desires

a love that gives and does not expect to receive

a love that chooses mercy and forgiveness over anger and bitterness

a love that fights for what is right and just rather than allowing evil to reign

a love that cares when no one else will pay attention

a love that is quick to listen and slow to speak

a love that is patient and never gives up

a love that endures the hard times instead of walking away

a love that shows kindness even when it is not deserved

a love that practices self control when faced with temptation

a love that is faithful

a love that is full of grace

a love that shows no division of favour

a love that accepts

a love without hypocrisy

a love that inspires and a love that hopes

"the greatest among you must be a servant"

"Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love."

LOVE NEVER FAILS

first post...this is what i see..

This is my first post as an official blogger. feel free to follow if you like.

This week I found a new favourite in tv viewing. It's unlike many of my other favourite shows (himym, seinfeld, scrubs, lost, ncis) The show is called History Makers, its on the History Channel weekdays 4:30pm. The show is a one hour program highlighting the life of a 'History Maker'

It appeals to me as i am an avid lover of Modern History but also because i desire to be a History Maker, someone who makes or creates history through my choices and actions. I believe that there is a desire in all of us to affect history and make our mark on society. My desire is that my impact on history shall be a positive and effective one.

Thomas Jefferson, the third American President was on an episode of History Makers this week. He was part of the revolutionary war, helped pen the declaration of independence, was for the emancipation of slavery and established the University of Virginia. But what made this man great. how was he able to achieve the things he did? What did he do to make him a History Maker?

Discipline.

TJ would wake up at 5am and begin reading and studying. He was studying to become a lawyer and would read for hours in the morning so that he could become knowledgeable in his field. His life was built upon the disciplines he installed when he was young man.

When watching this i was personally challenged and inspired. Being a uni student i have developed many a lazy habit these past few years and have not really been excited or passionate about what i was doing apart from the fact that i had the opportunity to positively influence the lives of children.

This year i am beginning a new course at uni, training me to become a High School History/English teacher. One of my desires as a teacher is to be able to positively affect the students that enter the classroom, inspiring and challenging them to make positive choices in their lives. But i do not want to be a lazy teacher, a lazy person. which i have come to be. i want to be a professional, good at what i do, in regards to my teaching and also living a life affects history positively.

Last time i checked laziness did not change history, only slowed it down.

This year it is my goal to spend my days watching less tv rather reading more, more of the bible and more texts that shall assist in my progress to become a professional and quality teacher.

We all have part to play in God's big picture of Life on this Earth, we have the choice to pursue his purpose or follow our own. We can live to please man and our own desires or live to please the Heavenly Father and chase his desires.

I want to live in the purpose and plan of God and get to know him so much more so that i can effectively live a life worthy of the call. I want to choose life!

Proverbs 23:23 "Get the truth and never sell it; also get wisdom, discipline and good judgment"

This is what I see..
